StateBench
Intro
StateBench is a new benchmark from Ai2 (Allen Institute for AI) that measures how well language models track changing information across long documents, for example an object or variable whose value is updated many times as the text goes on.
It has four difficulty levels, and Ai2 uses it to show where current models break down and how targeted training helps recurrent and hybrid (non-pure-Transformer) architectures handle longer sequences.

Explain
Why it matters
Long-context benchmarks often test retrieval (finding a needle). Real tasks such as agents following a long log, codebases, or multi-step stories need state tracking: knowing the current value after many updates. StateBench isolates that skill, and is especially relevant for linear-attention, recurrent and hybrid models that promise cheaper long contexts.
Limits
It is a research benchmark; check the blog and paper for exact task formats, data release and the models evaluated before comparing scores.
Usage
- Read the announcement at https://allenai.org/blog/statebench for the task design and four difficulty levels;
- Follow its links to the paper, code and data (if released);
- Run your model at each difficulty level and compare where accuracy falls off with document length;
- If you train recurrent or hybrid models, try the targeted-training recipe Ai2 describes and re-evaluate.
