Intro

Penny is the in-app AI money and trading assistant unveiled by Canadian fintech Wealthsimple on 2026-11-05 at its Toronto event Wealthsimple Presents: Something Good Is Going to Happen. Press release: https://newsroom.wealthsimple.com/wealthsimple-announces-ai-assistant-penny-and-11-more-releases-at-wealthsimple-presents-something-good-is-going-to-happen .

Capabilities (official/media):

  • Understands a client's whole financial picture and turns goals ("max out my RRSP by March") into action plans;
  • Sends e-Transfers and wires, pays bills and invoices, manages expenses;
  • Surfaces spending insights and flags duplicate card charges;
  • Buys/sells stocks, ETFs and more for self-directed investors, including one-click rebalancing orders;
  • Never moves money or trades without client confirmation; data stays inside Wealthsimple.

The event also brought Wealthsimple Pro, a Business credit card, Wealthsimple Pay instant transfers and more (12 releases). Secure ChatGPT / Claude account connections are slated for early 2027; Penny broad availability is expected late 2026 to early 2027.

Explain

Why it matters

While many big banks restrict third-party AI agents, Wealthsimple goes the other way: shipping its own agent, Penny, and planning ChatGPT/Claude connections. A landmark for agentic finance at the retail brokerage/banking layer.

Safety design

  • Human-in-the-loop: Penny prepares actions; the user confirms execution in-app;
  • Opt-in: Penny is idle unless you engage;
  • Data stays on-platform; third-party AI links have scoped access and extra checks for critical actions.

Limits

  • Canadian Wealthsimple clients only;
  • Staged rollout; some capabilities are "will be able to" rather than live;
  • A vertical finance assistant, comparable to dub's Arlo.

Usage

Who it's for

  • Canadian Wealthsimple users wanting natural-language control of transfers, bills, investing and registered accounts;
  • Practitioners tracking AI-agent rollout and compliance design in finance.

Getting started

  1. Update the Wealthsimple app and look for the chat bubble (staged rollout);
  2. Describe your goal to Penny and review the generated plan/orders;
  3. Confirm each action in-app;
  4. Watch for ChatGPT/Claude account connections in early 2027.
