GPT-6.1 Terra
Intro
GPT-6.1 Terra is the mid-tier model in OpenAI's GPT-6.1 family, released on October 26, 2026. It sits below GPT-6.1 Sol in price and is built for fast, cheap computer use: it reads what is on screen, takes actions across apps and writes naturally. OpenAI's launch line was "delivering fast and capable computer use at a lower price." Before launch, the name leaked through Microsoft and GitHub eval configs that switched from GPT-5.6 Terra to GPT-6.1 Terra.

Explain
Key points
- Position in the lineup: Terra is the cheaper, faster tier of GPT-6.1. Sol is the pricier tier above it, and GPT-6 Astra is the previous top model.
- Agent benchmark: OpenAI says Terra substantially outperforms GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents' Last Exam, a test of how well agents use professional software at work. It matches GPT-6 Astra there at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks over 3x faster on average than both Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- Price: standard API prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenRouter lists it at $1 / $5 per 1M input/output tokens with a context window of about 1.1M tokens.
- Leaderboards: Artificial Analysis lists GPT-6.1 Terra (Max) at 51 on its Intelligence Index v5.0.
- Strengths: understanding screenshots and on-screen content, navigating software, everyday agentic, coding and writing work, and high-volume workloads. Early users on X posted demos of it driving Blender and building 3D or motion showcases in Codex.
Usage
How to use it
- ChatGPT: rolling out to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work. OpenAI says your usage allowance goes further with Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra.
- Codex: pick GPT-6.1 Terra in Codex; users report a fast "Ultra" setting there.
- API: call the model
gpt-6.1-terrathrough the OpenAI API, or through routers such as OpenRouter.
Good fits
- Computer-use agents that fill forms, click through apps and read screens
- High-volume pipelines where cost per task matters more than peak intelligence
- Coding and writing tasks that don't need GPT-6.1 Sol
Tip
If you already run Sol for agent work, try Terra on the same tasks first. OpenAI's own numbers say it is faster and much cheaper at similar quality on software-use tasks.
